The "I Must Be Crazy" Lacy Simple Scarf Update

So, after working on this scarf for about two weeks now, I am happy to report that I have not yet gone crazy and I have actually made some very good progress!  Through the prodigious use of lifelines at the beginning of each panel of lace (and in some cases, many, many more) I am almost complete with the first half of the scarf and very happy with how it is turning out.  I just have the last lace section to go before binding off.  Then I get to do the whole thing over again. Sigh... did I mention how much I hate knitting the same thing twice?

I've mostly been knitting the scarf during lunch breaks or before work with the occasional long stretch at knit night or at home on a weekend.  I find I can listen to tv when I work on it, but not very closely, so Food Network or HGTV is my background noise of choice.  I'm making this scarf for charity, so I do have a bit of a deadline and some stress about doing a good job knitting it.  I think I can get it done in time though... as long as I don't get distracted by something else for too long.  I think you might know just how easily I can get distracted by other projects.

 

In a frenzy to take a nice picture of my progress when it's been raining pretty much for two days, I went to a local coffee shop after work today and plunked myself down in a chair to knit and enjoy an iced coffee.   Ok... I got some quiche too, but don't tell anyone ok?  It's a secret!  I'm supposed to be behaving myself :)   On that note, I think it might be time to make some dinner, so I guess I'll finally stop chattering and show you what the completed section of the scarf looks like.  Until next time!

Demo Potholder all done!

I actually have a couple more big projects I need to share with you, but... they were both baby shower gifts and therefore a surprise and thus I haven't posted a thing about them until now.  So, in an effort to get my sicky butt to bed early I thought I would start off with the finished demo potholder I started working on last week.

My first Fanciful Flower Potholder came out very well and I am extremely pleased to report that it is the thickest potholder I have ever encountered.  While this may not seem so important, let me point out that the first potholders I ever crocheted were so loosely constructed that inevitably I burn myself whenever I use them.  Granted, they were my first crochet project ever, so my gauge wasn't particularly consistent, but this latest potholder is - by design - at least twice or three times as thick and therefore very effective at protecting your hands!

After making this first one I did go out and get some new pretty cotton in better colors for working on the set I will be making for charity.  So, overall, this is a great free pattern and actually quite easy to follow.  I highly recommend it!  You can find the pattern here.

Can't Stop the Serenity

This past Saturday three of my friends and I took part in a really interesting event at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline. Can't Stop the Serenity is a yearly event that goes all across the country showing screenings of the movie Serenity, which is based in the wonderful but very short lived Firefly series by Joss Whedon. Whedon is also responsible for such great shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, two of my favorite shows of all time. Can't Stop the Serenity tours benefit Equality Now, which is global non-profit that,

"...works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure"

In addition to seeing Serenity again on the big screen, this tour was treated to seeing Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, another of Whedon's creations. What's so special about this showing is that Dr. Horrible has never been on the big screen. It is a video blog musical starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. Dr. Horrible as an evil scientist (with a PHD in horribleness) aspiring to join the Evil League of Evil. It is an absolutely hilarious 45 minute musical and on Saturday they turned on the captioning and let all of us Whedon geeks sing along with his creation. It was glorious!

So, if you are interested at all in Firefly, Serenity, Joss Whedon or The New England Browncoats (who sponsored the night) make sure you go to this event next year. It is well worth the late showing time of midnight, plus you can say you stayed out until 3 in the morning! It certainly made me feel like I was back in college rather than being -cough- 30 -cough, cough-.
